Detail Matters
It's the tools. And the finished projects. The tools and the finished projects. And the look on people's faces when I've brought back to life one of their treasured possessions. That, and the sheer thrill of doing a good job.
The tools are almost alive, especially the wood-working tools. You can't force them to your will, you have to work with their will, work the way they ask you to work. That holds true with the fabrics and other materials as well.
I've been working with fabrics and furniture all my life, from my earliest beginnings in Scotland, in Falkirk and Perth. It's such a satisfying business, handing over a physical object to someone and watching their reaction, their tactile response.
Details matter to me. I was once asked, "Why are you so concerned about lining up the pattern on that chair back with the seat fabric? Nobody will ever know.” My answer was, "I will know!"
